The 2017/2018 NHL season will officially get underway this October with the Leafs visiting the Jets and until then we have the opportunity to take advantage of some interesting, and potentially profitable, prop markets. The one you see below is the 'odds to reach the playoffs' market and it sounds exactly like what it is. You can bet on any team in the league, saying that they will either make the post season or not. All of the odds 'make ...

Last year the Toronto Maple Leafs vaulted themselves back into playoff relevance as they went from last place the year before to making the playoffs the following season. The young and talented Maple Leafs squad of 2016-17 infused hope back into a rabid fan base that has been longing for a winning team for more than a decade.

Toronto faced the Washington Capitals in six games in their opening round playoff matchup in what ended up being a thrilling series that was much closer than many analysts had predicted. Despite the fact that the Capitals finished with an amazing 23 points more than Toronto, the Leafs forced a grueling six game series which saw five of those games decided by a sudden death overtime. It was at that point that the loyal fan base of one of the league’s most storied franchises came to the realization that their beloved team is no longer in ‘rebuild’ mode, as they have already expedited the process.

Heading into the 2017-2018 season making the playoffs are no longer an aspiration, they are mandatory, and with the cast of young elite talent on the roster, they are looking to capture the Atlantic division title. After earning the 2nd wild card spot a season ago, the Toronto Maple Leafs are now paying 4.50 odds to capture the division this year, trailing only the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Bet365 Toronto Maple Leafs Futures Odds - $200 Sign up Bonus for Canadians T&C apply (18+)

Leafs Odds to Reach the Playoffs: Yes (1.18) - No (4.75)

    Leafs Odds to Win Division:

Leafs Odds to Win Conference: 8.00

Leafs Odds to Win Stanley Cup: 15.00

Auston Matthews stormed into the league in his first season as the consensus first overall pick scored 40 goals and instantly gave the Maple Leafs the much anticipated first line center and generational talent they’ve been waiting for. William Nylander and Mitch Marner also proved to the league that they are much further advanced than just high upside rookies. The consistency of the young core of players, and the fact that head coach Mike Babcock has instilled a winning swagger into these kids in just his second season at the helm has expectations and hopes quite high. According to the most current futures markets on Bet365 the Maple Leafs are 8.00 favourites to win the Eastern Conference. The only teams ahead of Toronto are Pittsburgh (won the last two Stanley Cups), the Washington Capitals (back to back Presidents’ Trophy winners) and the Tampa Bay Lightning who are loaded with talent and coming off a year with a tonne of injuries.

The future is bright for the Blue and White and at 15.00 futures odds to win the Stanley Cup this season, it’s fair to say the sports betting community agrees.

For the better part of a decade the Edmonton Oilers had been the laughing stock of the NHL. Continuously drafting with a top three pick in NHL entry drafts only to see these prospects turn into duds more often than not, what was once the most dominating franchise in the league, had become a wasteland of talent.

This all changed on April 18th, 2015 when once again the Oilers won the NHL draft lottery with one exception. They had struck gold and won the lottery of epic proportions as they earned the right to select Connor McDavid, the most anticipated junior prospect since Sidney Crosby. The selection of McDavid was a no brainer, and results were instantaneous. The 18-year old Newmarket Ontario native instantly became a point per game player in his first season finishing with 48 points in 45 games before going down with a nasty shoulder injury. The Oilers franchise finally appeared to be heading in the right direction and the playoffs appeared to be a realistic possibility.

Last season the Oilers took that next step as a team as they finished with 103 points (47-26-9) and earned the second seed in the Pacific division and fourth overall in a very difficult NHL Western Conference. Leading the charge for Edmonton, none other than Connor McDavid who played a full season and lead the league in scoring as the only player to hit the 100 point plateau. McDavid cleaned up at the NHL Awards to boot earning the Ted Lindsay, Art Ross and Hart Trophy after an incredible encore performance. What a difference 24-months can make as the once pathetic Oilers franchise is now trailing just the back to back Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins and are paying an even 10.00 Odds to win the Stanley Cup.

Edmonton Oilers Futures Odds at Bet365 Sportsbook

Odds to Reach the Playoffs: Yes (1.09) - No (7.50)

    Odds to Win Division: 2.80

    Odds to Win Conference: 5.50

Odds to Win Stanley Cup: 10.00

This year the Oilers aren’t sneaking up on anyone, and the sporting markets are validating the brilliance of Edmonton. According to Bet365 the Oilers are the highest ranked Western conference team paying 5.50 odds to win the conference. Edmonton fell just two points shy of the Anaheim Ducks a year ago to win the Pacific Division and have also jumped to the forefront to win the division this year paying 2.80 odds.

The truth is as great at Connor McDavid is, this team has a solid lineup from top to bottom. Second line center Leon Draisaitl took a massive leap in his career arc as the 21 year old third overall pick from Germany from 2014 finished the season with 77 points in the regular season and then followed that up with an excellent playoff run last season (6 goals, 10 assists through 13 games) and was instrumental to the teams voyage through nearly two full playoff rounds.

Goaltender Cam Talbot turned out to be a great free agent signing a season ago as the veteran finally brought the calming presence on the back end that had been missing for years. The emergence of McDavid also allowed former first overall pick Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to slot further down the lineup into a much more comfortable role. This team can certainly skate and score goals. The only real question mark will be how stable the defense corp will be, but make no bones about it, this team is one of the NHL’s finest and youngest...a very scary combination.
